Why You’re Not Getting Job Interviews… and what to do about it

You told yourself you’d just check the job boards quickly. That was two hours ago.

You’ve refreshed the same three sites, tweaked the same CV, and sent off another application to a role you’re not even sure you actually want. But it felt productive. And right now, productive is the only thing keeping the panic at bay.

If that feels familiar, keep reading. Because I want to offer you something more useful than another list of job search tips.

I want to offer you a reframe.

Why sending more job applications is making things worse

There’s a very convincing story that circulates in job search world. It goes something like this: the more you apply, the better your chances. So you apply for everything that’s vaguely relevant. You tweak your CV, you submit, you wait. You tweak your CV, you submit, you wait.

And somewhere along the way, you stop even asking yourself if you actually want the job. You just want a job. Any job. Something to make this stop.

And then they start landing. Bang. Bang. Bang. The “we’re sorry to inform you”. The “unfortunately on this occasion”. The “we’ve decided to move forward with other candidates”. One after another, dropping into your inbox like a slow, grinding drumbeat, each one chipping away at something you don’t have much left to spare.

So what do you do? You apply for more. Because stopping feels like giving up.

But here’s what nobody’s saying out loud, and I will, because I think you deserve honesty over comfort right now.

Volume without targeting isn’t productive. It’s exhausting. And there’s a difference.

You’re not failing at job searching. You might just be searching for the wrong things.

Why your job applications aren't getting responses right now

Before we go any further, I want to separate something important. The rejection isn’t always about you. Often it’s about the sheer volume of what’s happening out there.

A single role can attract over 400 applications. And the hiring manager behind that inbox has one job, to find the person who solves their problem. They have a gap in their team. They need it filled. They’re looking for the closest possible match, fast.

Which means how you position yourself matters more than how many times you apply.

If you’ve sent off 50, 80, 100 applications and the interviews aren’t coming, the honest question to ask isn’t am I good enough? It’s am I positioning myself as the solution to their specific problem, or am I just telling them I’m available?

That’s a very different question. And it’s a much more useful one.

How to get job interviews... the smarter approach

You get selective. Deliberately, strategically selective.

If you’re hitting the one-click apply button, stop. In a pile of 400 applications, a one-click apply stands out for all the wrong reasons. It signals you haven’t read the role, you haven’t tailored your application, and you’re not that bothered. Hiring managers can spot it immediately.

Before you apply for anything else, ask yourself three things:

  • Is this role genuinely in my target?
  • Does my experience make me the solution to their specific problem?
  • And so what? So what does my CV actually say about the level I work at and the impact I’ve made?

If you can’t answer those clearly, the application isn’t ready.

The people who get hired right now aren’t applying for the most jobs. They’re applying for the right ones, with a CV and LinkedIn that positions them precisely, before they’ve spoken to anyone.

That’s not luck. That’s strategy.

Your job search reality check

Go back and look at your last five applications. Honestly. How many were a genuine fit? How many did you send because it felt productive rather than because it was right?

So what has that approach actually delivered?

That’s where your answer is.

You’re not running out of options. You’re running low on focus. And that’s a much easier problem to fix.

Your experience is real. Your skills are real. What needs to shift is where you’re pointing them and how clearly you’re communicating the value you bring.

That’s the difference between a job search that drains you and one that actually moves you forward.
